Mt. Washington Restoration Proceeding on Schedule |
Working with folks like Pat Corsi and Matt Massei - both steeped in the great traditional designs of Pinehurst in North Carolina - made for a great environment in which to turn the design clock back to a wonderfully creative time in the history of the game and the craft of course design. All involved are enthused about the project and feel that finally, there's going to be a golf course worthy of this magnificent setting. We have a great assortment of archival photos of the old course as well as construction shots of last year's work that we'll post here soon. This is going to be a great year for golf in the White Mountains! The next phase of the master plan to upgrade the golf facility at Mt Washington will be to add nine holes to the resort's Mount Pleasant course - at which point they will two 18-hole courses. |
Old Marsh Country Club To Open in Wells July 4th Weekend |
||
The site's golf potential took a great step in the right direction when the Harris Family assumed control and an entirely new routing plan was developed. On a flat-ish site prone to poor drainage, the Harris Family made the financial commitment to do the work necessary to create a first rate golf facility. The resulting course has taken a great deal of its character of play from the classics of vintage design of early American golf. Old Marsh is a real traditional design throwback, as evidenced by Owner Jeff Harris commenting, "We are goin' old school here at Old Marsh". Just the kind of thing I like to hear! Old Marsh was a real team effort and should be a great addition to the New England golf scene... and appears to be the only new course that will open in all of New England in 2008! |
Restoring Penobscot Valley |
I'm working on a new project for Harris Golf in the "Great State of Maine" once again (my first was Old Marsh Country Club in Wells). This time around, I'll be overseeing the restoration of Donald Ross's Penobscot Valley Country Club just outside of Bangor, designed by Ross in 1924. We anticipate completion of the project before season's end. Folks up in Orono are already excited about the work that's been done. |
